Mock examination in Tanzania
A mock Examination (Mtihani wa mock) can simply defined as a practice test taken before the actual test/exam or an examination, esp. in a school, taken as practice before an official examination, an examination where the marks do or do not count, which serves chiefly as practice for future exams or exists so that the teachers are able to set a grade before the end of term.
Mock examination, usually internally set and marked, which is designed to give candidates experience of the examination process, as well as to identify areas of weakness in their knowledge and understanding which they need to improve before sitting the examination proper. It is commonly used in schools to prepare pupils for public examinations such as the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE), Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), Form Two National Assessment examination (FTNA), Standard Four National Assessment (SFNA) and Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE). It can also be used in higher education, from first degree right up to doctorate level, where it is not uncommon for a candidate to be given a mock viva in preparation for the real event. Such examinations are often referred to simply as ‘Mocks’.
Attempting mock examination, based on the NECTA exam format should form an integral part of student preparation because it tells students about their level of preparation. It also tells the areas that needs attention. Taking mock tests helps in evaluating the following;
- Mock tests help students by giving them an opportunity to revise the syllabus well before the real examinations. Revision is the key to remember all that you have studied. Mock tests help students revise the entire syllabus in the simulated setting of the actual exam. This way they remember what they have learned and thus perform well on the final day.
- Practice not only makes students perfect but also builds up their confidence. It helps students to manage time and performance with great confidence.
- It also helps in overcoming the phobias of the exam, such as over-excitement or nervousness in the exam. The more test you’ll take, the better you’ll understand your strong and weak areas. Through mock tests, you also get the opportunity to solve every question with a positive attitude.
A mock test series will also lend seriousness to the preparation once the aspirant sees his/her results. The student may analyze the results and can work on the weaker sections; weaknesses cannot become strengths overnight but hard work and perseverance will pay in the long run.
To crack any competitive exam in any part of the world, one has to be dedicated and focused. In fact, one has to go one step further and be obsessed with the exam. Continuous effort is the key to success, as the proverb says- “Try and try again and you’ll succeed”. At the same time, one must enjoy the preparation too – the learning, the problem solving and the healthy competition with friends without stress!
